About Me

IMG_0041Born in 1954 to the son of a career Navy man, Captain Joseph Miles Altman had fished the east and west coasts as well as Puerto Rico long before he moved away from home. At 18 he was the youngest USCG licensed captain in South Carolina at that time.

In the early 70‘s, Miles worked as the assistant manager of fishing development for the Sea Pines Company; a job that allowed him to take prominent outdoor journalists out fishing around the local waters. One assignment was fishing for cobia with Jim Bashline of ‘Field and Stream’ on the fly rod. Since then, Capt. Miles has written fishing-oriented weekly columns for many area newspapers and magazines, including the now-defunct ‘Hilton Head News’ ( “Scales and Tales” was the title), Island Events monthly magazine called, “Miles Around”, and has been published in both the Island Packet (Hilton Head’s long-serving daily newspaper) and the South Carolina ‘Wildlife’ magazine.

For the next ten years Capt. Miles ran numerous charter boats and private sport fishing yachts from Ocean City, Maryland down to the Florida Keys and the Bahamas. In the early 1980’s Capt Miles opened Captain’s Seafood Restaurant, what became known as an island institution for fresh-caught seafood dishes and supplying quality catches for local fine-dining establishments for almost twenty years; during which time he also worked extensively with commercial fisheries.

He then started a business called Miles Offshore focusing on seafood from South America, primarily snapper, mahi, swordfish, and tuna, making several trips to Brazil to work with fishermen there to help them upgrade the quality of their catches.

More recently, the Captain has forayed into boat sales, while continuing charter fishing, including a year to run a 68-foot Hatteras sport fisher to chase billfish again.

Now the present owner of Bayrunner Fishing Charters, Capt Miles can share his illustrious ocean experiences with you on your own personal charter and spend more time at home with his lovely family.
